M. Weinberg >> statement
Primarily, my work is about the freedom derived from re-arranging a set of givens from the visible world. I project the theater of my head into a pictorial space and invite the viewer to explore new relationships among the players and props, word and image.
Using cut found paper images and colors, collage offers me a comprehensive visual language with which I can approach any subject.
Some collages are instructional diagrams for inhabiting esoteric or ambiguous states of being. Others narrate fables of individual and communal life, consumer obsessions, love and sex, nature, technology, laundry, poetry, the theater and garbage. Occasionally, autobiographical events seep in, and this adds an element of realism.
Each work is a page from an endless manuscript, a stage set from an opera, or a still frame from an animation.
